The Atlantic Ocean beaches are frequently overlooked, in conversations about the most beautiful beaches. That is probably due in large part to their being over 2,000 miles of Atlantic beaches and coastline, just in the United States! Europe, South America and Africa appear to have been forgotten- at least by a fair amount of people in the States.
Yes, some of the east coast beach spots are painfully tacky and not very sophisticated. So what? For every pink flamingo dancing on a lawn, there are a couple beach towns oozing with charm that you have never of.
Let’s not forget the Canadian beaches in the Maritimes. The weather may be slightly inclement in the land of the Maple Leaf. you may also get eaten by a polar bear while you enjoy the fresh air, but the beaches are nice!
Even though the majority of people only think about larger beach spots for their vacations such as Ocean City, Miami, or the Keys, a good many smaller locations have built tremendous followings for being quality beach towns. Hopefully, a lot of beach bums and ocean lovers find some inspiration to check out someplace new, even if it is the beach town 30 minutes away!
On this list are the greatest East coast beach towns. Each town has direct access to beaches and water and notable family-friendly attractions. No serious attempt has been made to exclude certain places.

To the west, the Atlantic Ocean is bordered by the coastlines of the Americas: North, Central and South. Every Central and South American nation on the Caribbean, including among others Panama, Venezuela, Costa Rica, and the Dominican Republic have Atlantic Ocean beaches. In South America, Brazil and Argentina both feature long Atlantic Ocean beaches.
The southern Atlantic Ocean beaches are often drenched by turbulent weather featuring lots of rain and the occasional hurricane caused by warm moist air hits the Caribbean islands, Central America or the East coast beaches of the US. Other infamous weather events include Nor’easters, and heavy fog off eastern Canada’s shore.
Over in Europe, Atlantic Ocean beaches are located in France, Spain, Ireland and the United Kingdom, and Portugal. Other European countries facing the Atlantic are Denmark, Germany, Belgium, Iceland and Norway with an assist from the North Sea.
Traveling south from the European continent, the Atlantic Ocean beaches of Africa are to be found. These beaches start in Morocco and then continue south passing through Sierra Leone, the Ivory Coast, Nigeria, the Congo, Namibia and South Africa. The Atlantic’s cold water off the coast of Africa frequently brings fog and poor visibility to the northwestern shoreline of the African continent.
The miniature continent of Gran Canaria has deserts, steep mountains, forests and very nice beaches. The population of Playa Puerto Rico swells in the winter as Europeans come in droves to this African archipelago. The Canary Islands are an autonomous region of Spain.
Pass-a-Grille is your dream laid back beach town on the Gulf Coast with some of the nicest beaches you can imagine. Pass-A-Grille was recognized as a National Historic District in 1989, nearly a century after the town was established. The area has been inhabited for nearly 10,000 years though.
Coquina Beach is commonly thought of as the best beach in the Outer Banks. This peaceful beach spot is found in the Cape Hatteras National Seashore and named for the tiny clams at the water's edge. There is zero commercial development.
The Southern Shores beach, along with the rest of the Outer Banks, moves at a different speed than the rest of the United States. It is a welcome change from the hustle of modern life. There has been very little commercial development to spoil these beautiful beaches.
The three Brick beaches are exceptional, yet suffer from severe erosion and unimaginative names. Unfortunately, this is a frequent occurrence along the NJ shore, not only along the Brick beach. For whatever, its worth this town of more than 75,000 is the safest in the United States, according to the FBI.
Mantoloking is an exceptional beach spot. Over the years, Mantoloking has counted both Tony Soprano, (James Gandolfini) and Richard Nixon as residents. Katherine Hepburn also owned a summer house here. Storm surge from Hurricane Sandy damaged 90% of the properties in this wealthiest Jersey Shore beach community.
The small coastal town of Bay Head's charm lies in the Victorian mansions that run along the gorgeous beach. This visit in June of 2017, was the first time I had been along the beach here since Hurricane Sandy ravaged the coast five years earlier. This beach spot successfully brings you back to a simpler, more elegant time.
Assateague Island with its wild horses is memorable. It is an absolute must visit place if you have the opportunity. The barrier island's beach measures 37 miles long. The northern part of the island is Maryland, with the smaller southern bit in Virginia. Popular camping spot.
Located on Maryland's famed Eastern Shore, the beaches of Ocean City are stunning and perfect for a family vacation. This popular resort town has a fun boardwalk with rides for the kids, a great nightlife for older kids and crabs feasts for everybody.
Asbury Park is back. Given up for dead long ago, the city of Asbury Park has been revitalized. It is now, a hip spot for a beach vacation. With gorgeous beaches and conveniently located with rail access to the city, Asbury is making up for the multiple decades of abandonment rapidly.
Belmar Beach is a fun beach town for the whole family. If you want to party, this is one of the best places to do it. If you want your family beach vacation to be as slow as possible, you are also in the right spot. Over the years, Belmar has continued to improve rapidly and is now comparable to its more upscale neighbors.
A couple minutes outside Sydney, Tamarama Beach is often closed to swimmers. It is the most dangerous patrolled beach in New South Wales. It's also a good place to be to watch the beautiful people. The Australian way of life — Pleasure, freedom, independence and enjoyment is on full display.
The seafront in Sliema along the promenade is full of activity starting in Qui Si Sana. A great place to swim and enjoy the day in the Mediterranean sun. Lined with lively cafes, these limestone beaches are fun for the whole family.
