Best Coronado Island Beach
It’s impossible to have a silly list of the best American beaches– and omit Coronado Island beach. The entire area is as close to paradise as I have ever seen. The Victorian houses in this little beach town are slightly reminiscent of one of the expensive East Coast beach spots. However, the flora and weather certainly do not belong on the Atlantic seaboard.

The best Coronado Beach according to locals is…
Since the 1980s, Coronado, has also been mistakenly known as Coronado Island. This resort city located in San Diego County, California, has a population of 24,697 at the 2010 census, a slight increase the 2000 census figure of 24,100. It is located across and around the bay from downtown San Diego.
A tombolo connects the Coronado Island beach to the mainland, called the Silver Strand. Coronado is considered a tied island, as it is an island that is connected to land only by the Silver Strand State Beach: a spit of beach materials connected to land at both ends.
In 2012, Dr. Stephen Leatherman, Director of the Laboratory for Coastal Research, ranked Coronado Beach as the best beach in the United States.
Coronado Island Beach – Best Beach in America
Coronado is Spanish for “crowned one”, and thus it is nicknamed The Crown City. Three ships of the United States Navy have been named after the city, including the USS Coronado (LCS-4).
The Navy operates Naval Air Station North Island (NASNI or “North Island”) on Coronado. The training center for Navy SEALs and Special warfare combatant-craft crewmen (SWCC) can be found on the southern side of the town, the Naval Amphibious Base Coronado. The two facilities combine to form the Naval Base Coronado complex.
Coronado retains largely the same area that it had in 1857.
Parking is somewhat limited here, so be prepared to come early. Drinking is not allowed on the beaches of California anymore. So bring some water and soft drinks instead. There are a fair amount of local options for places to eat. Besides packing your lunch, the next easiest option is the Hotel Del at the end of the beach. This resort was supposedly the inspiration for the Emerald City in the Wizard of Oz as the author was once briefly resident.
Coronado is quite elegant. This perfect beach destination is simply amazing. It’s about a mile and a half. Point Loma can be seen to the right (north) and Mexico to the left.
